DESTINATION GUIDE

# Everyone's Fighting for Parking at Old Faithful.
You Could Have the Bighorn National Forest to Yourself.

4 million people visit Yellowstone every year. Most of them spend more time in line than in nature. Here's the alternative they don't know about — 90 minutes from downtown Sheridan.

## Yellowstone Has 4 Million Visitors. Sheridan Has Exactly Enough.

In peak summer, Yellowstone's most popular trailheads fill by 8 a.m. The Old Faithful parking lot holds 500 cars — and turns away hundreds more daily. Canyon Village has a 45-minute wait for lunch. The west entrance gate? Bring a book.

Now picture Cloud Peak Wilderness — 189,000 acres of alpine lakes, granite peaks, and meadows of wildflowers. On a Saturday in July, you might see six other hikers. The Tongue River Canyon trail, 20 minutes from downtown Sheridan, offers a 7-mile riverside hike where your biggest crowd concern is a moose.

The Bighorn Mountains aren't a consolation prize. They're the point. A million acres of national forest with a fraction of the traffic, no entrance fee, and no reservation system. You just drive up and start hiking.

**By the numbers:** Yellowstone sees 4.86 million recreation visits annually (NPS, 2023). Bighorn National Forest? Approximately 600,000. That's 8× fewer people in a forest nearly the same size.

## What Sheridan Has That Yellowstone Doesn't

Yellowstone gateway towns exist to sell you a T-shirt. Sheridan exists because real people live here — and have since 1882. The difference is immediately obvious.

**Real restaurants.** [Black Tooth Brewing](https://www.blacktoothbrewingcompany.com) won a Great American Beer Festival medal. Frackelton's has been a fine-dining anchor for two decades. The Mint Bar is a living museum of Western history. Java Moon serves the best espresso between Billings and Casper.

**Walkable culture.** Main Street Sheridan has the [WYO Theater](/community), King's Saddlery (where handmade saddles cost more than a used truck), the Brinton Museum in nearby Big Horn, and Trail End State Historic Site — a Flemish Revival mansion built by a cattle baron senator.

**Polo in the Bighorns.** The Big Horn Equestrian Center hosts polo matches every Sunday from June through September. It's been happening since 1898 — the oldest continuously played polo in America. Admission is free. Bring a blanket.

**The WYO Rodeo.** Mid-July brings one of the top PRCA rodeos in the country, complete with a week of parades, concerts, and the spectacular Indian Relay Races.

## Still Want Yellowstone? Use Sheridan as Your Basecamp.

If Yellowstone is non-negotiable, Sheridan is still the smarter play. Instead of staying in a $350/night motel in West Yellowstone with paper-thin walls and no kitchen, stay in a real vacation rental in Sheridan — then take the most beautiful drive in America to the park.

**The route:** Sheridan → US-14 through Shell Canyon → Greybull → Cody → Chief Joseph Highway → Yellowstone Northeast Entrance. Total drive: about 4.5 hours. Every mile is stunning — and you enter the park at its least-crowded gate, with immediate access to the Lamar Valley, the best wildlife viewing in the ecosystem.

**The advantage:** You skip the West Yellowstone traffic. You skip the Madison Junction crawl. You get Lamar Valley elk, bison, and (if you're lucky) wolves — with a fraction of the competition for pullouts.

Then you drive back to Sheridan, park your car, walk to Black Tooth Brewing, and have a proper dinner. Try doing that in Canyon Village.

## Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Sheridan, Wyoming from Yellowstone?

Sheridan is roughly 300 miles — about 4.5 hours — from Yellowstone's northeast entrance via the Bighorn Scenic Byway and Chief Joseph Highway. The drive itself is one of the most spectacular in the American West, crossing Shell Canyon, the Absaroka Range, and the Beartooth Highway corridor.

Is Sheridan, Wyoming worth visiting?

Absolutely. Sheridan consistently ranks among the top small towns in the West, with a walkable historic downtown, world-class fly fishing, Big Horn polo, the WYO Rodeo, and direct access to the Bighorn Mountains. Unlike Yellowstone gateway towns, Sheridan has genuine local culture — not just gift shops.

What can you do in the Bighorn Mountains vs Yellowstone?

The Bighorn Mountains offer hiking in Cloud Peak Wilderness (one of Wyoming's least-visited wilderness areas), fly fishing on the Tongue River, skiing at Antelope Butte, snowmobiling, mountain biking, and scenic drives like US-14 through Bighorn National Forest. The key difference: you'll rarely see another car.

Is Sheridan a good base camp for Yellowstone?

Yes — and arguably a better one than West Yellowstone or Cody. Sheridan offers real restaurants, a thriving downtown, 40+ vacation rental properties, and the advantage of entering Yellowstone from the northeast (Lamar Valley), which is far less crowded than the west entrance.

What is the best time to visit Sheridan, Wyoming?

June through September for outdoor activities, polo season, and the WYO Rodeo (mid-July). September brings spectacular fall foliage. December through March offers skiing at Antelope Butte and snowmobiling in the Bighorns. May and October are excellent shoulder-season values.
